A 2,300 foot Asteroid is headed toward earth and will pass by at around 5pm Pacific tonight. The asteroid rock is within 3.35 million miles of earth, roughly 14 times the distance between Earth and the moon. This is close in space standards. Fortunately, there’s no danger of the huge rock slamming into us. If it comes close enough to …Continue Reading
As this week saw the first flight of a commercial spacecraft to the ISS, I can’t help but think about how important a step this is in finally freeing up trade here on Earth and promoting innovation. Space holds resources that are scarce on Earth, and I believe that private travel is the first step in getting us there to …Continue Reading
Congratulations to SpaceX for the flawless launch of Falcon 9. Early this morning at Cape Canaveral the Falcon departed for a historic trip to the International Space Station. This is a huge step toward space commercialization and demonstrations how private companies are at the forefront of space commercialization. There’s a tremendous amount of waste in the government and it’s a …Continue Reading
Yesterday the moon passed in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges and creating incredible visual effects for the world to see. Here in Seattle, unsurprisingly the clouds covered our view but it was quite a show for people in other parts of the world where the sky was clear. An annular eclipse occurs when …Continue Reading
Recently, Moon Express delivered its Mission design package to NASA. This Preliminary Design Checkpoint Technical Package is part of its $10M Innovative Lunar Demonstration Data (ILDD) contract. Moon Express provided NASA continuing data on the development of its commercial lunar robotic missions and plans to mine the Moon for precious planetary resources. Here’s an excerpt from the press release that …Continue Reading

The space shuttle Discovery rode on top of a 747 carrier aircraft today (Tuesday, April 17, 2012) on its way to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. Discovery was the longest-serving orbiter before it retired last year on March 9. Prior to its retirement, Discovery was NASA’s Orbiter Fleet leader, having flown …Continue Reading
I’ve been referred to as “the Man Who Wants to Mine The Moon.” In response to some basic questions I’ve been asked about the moon, here are some interesting facts: Diameter: The diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles (3,476 kilometers) Formation: The leading explanation for how the moon formed was that a giant impact knocked off the raw ingredients …Continue Reading
The biggest solar storm in five years has engulfed Earth, but so far most things such as major power utilities remain undisturbed. Scientists say that could change as the storm spends the day shaking the planet’s magnetic field. As a result, some airlines are flying alternate routes. According to Fox News “In a study released last week, the North American …Continue Reading
A geomagnetic storm that began Monday is expected to continue and be felt on Earth throughout Wednesday. Solar flares are caused by the sudden release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun’s atmosphere and coronal mass ejection (CME), bursts of charged particles are released into space. This can interfere with technology on Earth, such as electrical power grids, communications systems …Continue Reading
