As this week saw the first flight of a commercial spacecraft to the ISS, I can’t help but think about how important a step this is in finally freeing up trade here on Earth and promoting innovation. Space holds resources that are scarce on Earth, and I believe that private travel is the first step in getting us there to mine these precious elements.
When people think of mining, the first thing that comes to mind is drilling for oil or blasting for coal, but the mining of rare earth elements is different. These elements are critical in many green and emerging technologies. From solar cells and hybrid cars to mp3 players and the Internet, we rely on rare earth elements more than we realize. The problem we face on earth is that beyond their scarcity, these elements are not evenly distributed throughout the world. We need to disrupt this market. By finally being able to reach the moon and harvest the resources that are there, we can overcome the scarcity of rare earth elements and create the infrastructure necessary for innovation to continue. This weeks launch represents more than just a step forward for private space travel, it also ensure the future of innovation.
