Fifty years ago, almost to the day, was the first U.S. Human Space flight. America watched in awe as Alan Shepard flew into space—the very first American to do so. According to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, “The flight was a great success, and on the strength of Shepard’s accomplishment, NASA built the leadership role in human spaceflight that we have held ever since.”

I’m confident that the next fifty years will hold boundless opportunities for us, especially with NASA and White House policy favoring commercial partnerships. The time is now to build on this momentum and extend the power of commercial entrepreneurship beyond Earth orbit.
